Health and the Environment: The Human Connection
A two-session program designed to heighten awareness and encourage action around the issue of toxins in our environment and the consequences of these toxins on human health. The program provides students in middle school and high school with practical solutions such as safe alternatives and healthy lifestyle choices. A partnership project between Pennsylvania Resources Council and The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute’s Center for Environmental Oncology
Litter Prevention Program
In-classroom program designed o teach elementary and middle school students about litter and why it is a problem in their community. Students learn about the amount of litter occurring Pennsylvania and ways they can reduce it.

Workshops provide teachers with the tools to teach their students about environmental issues and provide an assortment of hands-on activities they can take back to their classrooms. Teachers receive credits for under PA Department of Education Act 48.
The Watershed Awareness Teacher Workshop: provides background information, lesson plans, hands-on activities, and additional resources related to water and watersheds. Participants will learn how human activity on the land affects the quality of water in our rivers and streams –our drinking water supply. The workshop will address both point and nonpoint source (NPS) pollution. Various sources of NPS pollution will be discussed, along with problems associated with various behaviors, types of NPS and suggestions for remediation and solutions to some of the water quality problems plaguing our region. A 3-D watershed model will be used and teachers will experience several hands-on activities that can be replicated in the classroom. Teachers will receive a Teacher’s Guide containing lesson plans and background information along with additional resources.
Air Quality and You Teacher Workshop: This Act 48 accredited teacher workshop will focus on the human health and environmental impacts of air pollutants as well as behavioral changes that can minimize emissions and exposure. For more information click here!
Climate Change Challenge: A teacher/pre-service teacher workshop that highlights increased awareness, actions that responsible, empowered citizens can embrace, and consumer options that can be explored as citizens seek ways in which to reduce their “carbon footprint” and contribute to a reduction in the magnitude of the climate change crisis and its ramifications. Increasing environmental literacy by teaching about the impact that our lifestyle choices have on the environment and heightening awareness and appreciation of the power of each individual’s actions toward improving our communities, both local and global, can create lasting change.
Health and the Environment: The Human Connection: An Act 48 teacher workshop providing background information, lesson plans and hands-on activities designed to teach students about the various toxins in our environment and how they affect human health.
