Environmental Footsteps

Environmental Footsteps – PRC East’s eight programs introduce participants to regional and global environmental issues and offer unique solutions easily addressed by students. Programs can be scheduled at a school or as a field trip to PRC’s facility in Ridley Creek State Park (Delaware County). All programs address specific environment and ecology standards of the Pennsylvania Dept. of Education.

Teacher Workshops
ACT 48 Watershed Awareness Teacher Workshop

Watershed Awareness for Grades 4+.
Students learn about the water cycle, non-point and point source pollution and topography. Students use an EnviroScape to investigate movement of water throughout the landscape. Can be held as an in classroom program or as a field trip to PRC’s facility located in Ridley Creek State Park. Field trip includes additional outdoor activities, including water quality testing and rolling giant raindrops through a mini-watershed.

Wood, Water and Worms, Grades 3+.
An introduction to the ecology of the eastern deciduous forest and streams. Held as a field trip to PRC’s facility in Ridley Creek State Park. Program is a 2 hour hike into the woods, ending at Ridley Creek.

Songbirds, grades 3+.
Students participate in an introduction to birding in southeastern PA. Explores the differences in birds and their needs. Includes use of binoculars (program limited to 20 students at one time). Program can be conducted at school site if there is a tree canopy supporting birds, otherwise, program is presented at PRC’s site.

Energy Conservation for grades 1+.
This is a hands-on program using energy free toys, discussing alternative energy sources and learning to be good energy consumers.

Moving Toward A Greener Lifestyle, Grades 5+.
Many products commonly found in homes can harm the environment. Students will learn about effective substitutes and how to become better consumers when making purchasing decisions.

ViewFinders, Too for Middle School students.
Students learn about community planning and analyze the visual environment in their own neighborhoods. (Multiple sessions).

Litter and Recycling, grades K+.
One of the most common forms of litter in PA is candy and snack wrappers, and school children comprise the group most likely to litter. Program includes a follow-up service learning or community service project (of the schools choice).

Organic Gardens and Composting, grades 3+.
Students learn to turn what some consider to be waste, into a valuable soil-enrichment product and methods of organic gardening. PRC’s site contains a 3,200 sq ft award winning garden that is incorporated into this session (if held as field trip to PRC). Program can be held at a school if there is a garden.


Currently, some of PRC’s school programs are free, with fees covered by grant funds. Programs are conducted for individual classes or as small assemblies. Please call for further information.
