This PennDOT office runs 55 Adopt-A-Highway programs that clean adopted highways 4 times a year. One of the clean-ups is usually scheduled on Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Day in April; the second in October; the other two are at the discretion of the adopting group. PennDOT provides vests, gloves, and trash bags for the volunteers.

The Adams County Office of Solid Waste helps residents with clean-ups and disposal of litter and other solid waste. It assists in a program called "From the Ground Up" which utilizes prison volunteers to pick up litter from the streets of Gettysburg. It also has on-going clean-ups and will deal with reports of specific community litter problems and illegal dumping. It participates in United Way's National Join Hands Day in organizing litter clean-ups. Local newspapers are the Gettysburg Times and The Evening Star.
