35 Schools in the City of Pittsburgh “Stash the Trash” on April 23rd
Pittsburgh, PA – On Friday April 23rd thousands of City of Pittsburgh School students participated in the 18th annual Stash the Trash program and cleaning up the City!
Organized by the Pennsylvania Resources Council, Inc. (PRC), a non-profit environmental organization and creators of the Litterbug icon, Stash the Trash is a one day city-wide litter pick up done by K-8 school students. This year 35 schools and over 2500 students – elementary, middle and high schools – private, public and parochial will be participating. The goal is to teach children the importance of not littering and to make sure their schoolyards remain litter free year round.
This annual event will be the beginning of a yearlong initiative to have school students play an active role in keeping their neighborhoods clean and litter free by participating in ongoing litter pick-ups on school property.
PRC is once again partnering with the Clean Pittsburgh Commission, the City of Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh Public Schools to provide support to schools for this one-day event and encourage them to implement a year round clean-up effort at their school. It has long been recognized that participation in these types of service learning projects help foster a sense of caring and responsibility among students and encourages them to become the next generation of caretakers of our environment. In 2009, students picked up 746 bags of trash and 200 bags of recyclables during the spring and fall Stash the Trash events.
David Mazza, PRC’s Regional Director said, “The problem of litter reaches into every nook and cranny of our community, this partnership will allow students to become role models to reduce the harmful effects litter has in our neighborhoods.”
PRC and the CPC have partnered this year with the Pittsburgh Pirates to recognize the great work of our City’s school students. The Pirates have donated tickets to participating Stash the Trash schools for the May 12th afternoon game against the Cincinnati Reds.
Chaz Kellem, Manager of Diversity Initiatives for the Pittsburgh Pirates said, “It has been a wonderful experience partnering with PRC and the CPC on this Stash the Trash event and we are happy to participate and support efforts that promote student involvement in serving their community.” |
