DON'T BE A LITTERBUG
Litter is a big problem. Many people are totally unaware they contribute
to this problem because they have many misconceptions about littering.
To save money and help the environment, learn what these misconceptions
are and help educate Litterbugs.

Myth: "Throwing butts does
not harm anything - everyone does it."

Fact: Cigarettes contain poisonous
chemicals harmful to animals and the environment. They
contribute to several thousand fires each year, and take up
to 5 years to degrade.

Myth: "It's okay to toss fruit -
it will biodegrade."
|
Fact: Thousands of animals
are injured or killed trying to get food littered on
highways. Fruit takes 2 years to biodegrade.

Myth: "Littering creates jobs."
|
|
Fact: Without volunteers Pennsylvania
would spend more than $50 million a year on
litter cleanup. Cleaning up litter costs about 9 time
more than it costs to collect trash from public and private
trash receptacles.

Myth: "One small wrapper won't matter
- it's so small, who will notice?"
|
Fact: Litter begets litter and litter
leads to lower property values and crime.
If no one picks up the wrapper, it could take 30 years to
degrade.

- Political signs and other advertising on utility poles
and trees
- Abandoned vehicles
- Inadequate litter cleanup in commercial areas
- Litter at public events
- Uncovered trucks
- Your community's litter cleanups

Get information on:

When you report a problem, the Hotline Staff will:
- Give you information on how to deal with the litter problem
you are reporting
- Notify municipalities and agencies if necessary
- Notify sources of litter (e.g. trucks with no tarps, windshield
flyers, street handbills) if needed
- Follow up your call to find out if the problem was resolved
The Hotline will need you to:
- Follow through on the suggestions provided by the Hotline Staff
- Report to the Hotline on your progress
